I just bought a pair of Speedplay Zeros – my first Speedplays. I’m trying to install the cleats on my shoes – a pair of Sidi Genius 5 Loricas from 2005 or so.
On the Speedplay website it says for the Sidi shoes to pry off the shims and use the thicker shims. I looked at both set of shims, and it looks to my eye like the thinner shims fit better with the sole (more flush). The thicker set of shims result in a gap between the cleat adapter and the sole.
Do you have Sidis and Speedplays? Which set of shims do you use?
Actually, my shoes are from 2004. The sole looks like the one here:

I don’t have Sidis, but go with whatever looks like it makes the most contact. Is there any reason not to mix shims? I can’t think of one. You might want to try it – 1 in the front, 4 on the back or whatever.
FYI: You are going to be pleased by this, but (I think) you have a 4hole shoe so you won’t need the adapter plate to convert from 3hole to the 4hole.
If that is the case, you will get the advantage of an even lower stack height and save a few grams. (only note, check Speedplay. You may need some uber thin plate to protect the carbon sole.
Otherwise follow the advice above.
